Do Catholic school closures spell the end of an iconic educational institution in Boston, or is there still time for a Hail Mary? 

The Archdiocese of Boston announced May 30 that Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley has appointed Father Cristiano Guilherme Borro Barbosa as episcopal vicar for the archdiocese's Central Region effective July 1. Father Jonathan Gaspar, the pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Brookline, has been serving as interim regional episcopal vicar since Feb. 1.

Father Aidan J. Walsh, a priest of the archdiocese since his incardination on May 15, 1998, died in Boston on March 4, 2023. He was born in the Hub's Jamaica Plain section on Jan. 21, 1940. He was the last surviving of the eight children of the late John and Elizabeth (Gill) Walsh; among his deceased siblings was a sister, Sister Mary (Donatus) Walsh, CSJ.
