Bishop Stephen Xiangtai Yang of Handan spent 15 years in labor camps until 1980 for defying Chinas communist regime

BEIJING (CNS) -- Retired Bishop Stephen Yang Xiangtai of Handan, who was persecuted and forced to spend years in labor camps during the Cultural Revolution, died at the age of 98.

Bishop Stephen Yang Xiangtai of Handan was persecuted during Chinas Cultural Revolution. After his arrest in 1966 he served 10 years of a 15-year sentence in labor camps and factories before his acquittal in 1980. He never joined the state-sanctioned church.
