The Brainerd Ski Club in 1938 built the Boom Lake ski slide with Works Progress Administration labor. Ski jumpers landed on the Brainerd lake’s southeast shore. The ski slide no longer exists.
The Crow Wing County Historic Courthouse along Laurel Street is the seat of county government, but the historic courthouse is no longer building where judges adjudicate matters of law. The first courthouse was located at the southeast corner of Fourth and Kingwood before it was sold.
The Northwest Paper Co.’s beginnings date back to 1898 with the construction of a groundwood mill and a one-machine newsprint mill in Cloquet. That led to the construction of a two-grinder pulp mill in 1903 at the west end of the Mississippi River dam that was built in 1888 near Brainerd.
