Politicians in Thompson believe new proposed liquor laws that could see more retailers selling alcohol would exacerbate addiction issues.

Councillors feel legislation to enable alcohol sales in stores other than Liquor Mart and private beer vendors would not be beneficial for Thompson.

The mayor and council elected by Thompson residents last week officially stepped into their roles when they were sworn in Nov. 2 at City Hall.

Colleen Smook was re-elected as mayor of Thompson by voters in the Northern Manitoba city on Oct. 26, defeating Les Ellsworth and Ron Matechuk.

It’s municipal election day in Manitoba and polls are open for voters to select their next mayor and council until 8 p.m.

Three weeks from now, one thing is certain: Thompson city council and the School District of Mystery Lake will look much different than they currently do.

Thompson has enough candidates to make mayoral and council elections necessary but the seven school board trustee candidates will be acclaimed.

Paving work that was supposed to be done this year will not go ahead until next year — and it will cost significantly more than was originally anticipated.

Thompson needs at least three more council candidates and half a dozen school board trustee candidates in order to make elections necessary on Oct. 26.

Council debated new water and sewer rates that the Public Utilities Board recently approved for nearly half of their May 2 committee of the whole meeting.
