By Chris Nichols and Keyshawn Davis | Special to the OBSERVER - The Sacramento County homeless Point-In-Time Count is attempting to better understand the causes of homelessness in the region, with volunteers asking residents questions about their experiences and struggles.

Hundreds of volunteers took part in Sacramento County’s homeless Point-In-Time Count this week. The biennial survey provides an estimate for the county’s overall homeless population and is required to receive federal homeless funding.

Tents planned to be taken down by Thursday night were about 1,000 feet outside of an elementary school, but that's not the reason for the cleanup. Camping in a park goes against city rules.

“We have been making tremendous progress,” Incident Commander Brian Pedro said. “Dare I say it, it’s been going exactly as planned.”

The city and has partially of entirely cleared encampments along the W-X corridor and Alhambra Boulevard over the past few weeks

The team's focus right now is on streamlining processes and better understanding the data available, while also connecting more people with resources, enforcing city codes and better managing encampments.
