A determined group of volunteers, wearing gloves and armed with garbage bags, converged on Baldwin and Freeport’s Brookside Preserve on Nov. 25 to improve the park’s environmental health, one piece of litter at a time.

A sinkhole opened up in June at the intersection of Grand and Lorenz avenues after a sewer pipe developed cracks allowing sand to enter the underground pipe and creating a void under the roadway.

Repairs to sinkholes and a police station damaged in a fire are in a $220 million capital budget approved by Nassau legislative committees Monday.

The county executive acknowledged work could extend beyond July 15 if there are "underlying conditions we may not know about."

The sinkhole at Grand and Lorenz avenues caused sewage to seep into the Brookside Preserve creek and the backyards of several homeowners, according to Legis. Debra Mulé (D-Freeport), who represents the area.
