"No surprises in Tuesday’s primary election, but some intriguing choices set up for November," writes the Editorial Board. "That Democrats swept through local legislative contests was totally expected. None of the races were competitive, even though these races will reprise in the Nov. 5 general election because of California’s Top 2 voting system."

When it comes to the three county supervisor races that were up for grabs this cycle, the new numbers did not result in a major shakeup of the standings, though thousands of votes are still left to be counted.

"I'm a ratepayer and my rates are going to go up," said Board Chair Bruce Jaffe, also a candidate for 2nd District Santa Cruz County Supervisor, before the vote at the Capitola City Council chambers. "This is an investment in the future and I'm willing to do that."

The five candidates who are vying for his spot include Kristen Brown, Bruce Jaffe, David Schwartz, Tony Crane, and Kim de Serpa.

"Our choice is Capitola Mayor Kristen Brown, an eight-year member of the City Council, who also is chair of the county Regional Transportation Commission and former president of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG)," writes the Sentinel Editorial Board. "Brown’s election would elevate a woman onto what has been an all-male board."

Ready or not, election season is upon us. For the Sentinel Editorial Board, that means extended interview sessions with candidates for local offices, along with public officials’ advocating for new taxes, or advocates for and against a Santa Cruz measure that could constrain future housing development.

The 40-year county resident and longtime Soquel Creek Water District boardmember, confident in his own skills and expertise, aims to broaden the scope of their application by running for the soon-to-be vacant 2nd District seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors.

Santa Cruz County Clerk Tricia Webber told the Sentinel ballots for the March 5 presidential primary will be mailed out to voters the first week of February with voter guides sent about a week prior.
