Some family members told the commission they waited several days to learn that their loved ones died in the Lewiston mass shooting.

The independent commission looking into the mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, heard from survivors of the massacre and family members of the people murdered on Thursday.

"The fear that I feel from being at the scene of a mass shooting has changed my life," one survivor said.

This year was marked by several tragedies, including school shootings, serial killings, and crimes in Washington, D.C., against federal lawmakers.
