Sydneysider John Lyras’s love affair with Moonah Links will reach new heights on Friday if he can maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard and claim the major prize on offer at the Final Stage of the PGA Tour of Australasia Qualifying School.
One of only three players to break 70 on Thursday as Peter Thomson’s imposing Open Course and the Mornington Peninsula’s wicked winds once again kept scoring in check, Lyras sits atop the leaderboard at 3-under par alongside Victorian Will Heffernan (71) heading into Friday’s final round.

A career renaissance that has gone largely unnoticed now carries an extra element of gravitas after Queenslander Brad Kennedy secured the 2020/2021 ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit.
The outbreak of the coronavirus in early 2020 caused significant disruptions to the Australasian tournament schedule but a run of six events in the space of eight weeks ensured the Order of Merit was completed and Kennedy could be pronounced its champion.
Winner of the New Zealand Open in March last year â the final event before the temporary suspension of the season â Kennedy added the inaugural event of The Players Series at Rosebud Country Club to his tally of season victories to go with two top-fives and a tie for seventh at last weekâs Golf Challenge NSW Open at Concord Golf Club.

“I’m definitely in better shape than last year (when he missed the cut) and knowing the course means you can stay aggressive on the weekend.”
“It’s good to be in contention because there was a time on Thursday when it was so wet I struggled to hold onto the club for five holes.”
The best of the Wools-Cobb birdies came on his eighth hole, the par five 17th, when he drove the ball right off the tee and cut a three wood over the trees to the green.

A sharp eye scanning the tee sheet and a direct message on Instagram has landed Stephanie Bunque a valuable ally as she enters the professional ranks at the inaugural event of The Players Series at Rosebud Country Club this week.
A member at Victoria Golf Club, Bunque spotted Geoff Ogilvyâs name on the tee sheet last year and reached out to the former US Open champion who is this week serving as host at Rosebud.
Paired together at the St Andrews Beach Invitational organised by Mike Clayton last June, Bunque and Ogilvy have remained in contact ever since, the 23-year-old seeking guidance before turning professional straight after finishing runner-up at the Master of the Amateurs earlier this month.

Heâs led since day one but No.1 seed Deyen Lawson has declared that any of the 24 qualifiers are capable of walking away as champion as the Gippsland Super 6 moves into the match play phase on Sunday.
The top eight qualifiers through 54 holes of stroke play have earned a direct path through to round two and the final 16 with Blake Windred and Brett Rankin securing a spot in the top eight in a playoff that consigned Bryden Macpherson to ninth spot.
Macpherson and the remaining qualifiers now need to win five six-hole matches to take the title with Justin Warren, Michael Wright, Cory Crawford, David Bransdon and Rick Kulacz having to make their way past a seven-for-five playoff to qualify for the match play.
