Columbus police are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of an 18-year-old. Police say the shooting happened early Sunday morning at 1:41 a.m. in the 700 block of Parkview Drive. UPDATE 1/24/24 5:53 p.m.: The Muscogee County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the victim injured in the shooting. According to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan, the victim was identified as 48-year-old Lacoya Whittlesey. Whittlesey was pronounced dead at 4:58 p.m. due to a gunshot wound to the torso. The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene, according to the department’s X page.

The Ledger-Enquirer has been keeping a record of every homicide in Columbus. The latest victim was a 43-year-old man died Thursday after being shot earlier in December.

He was charged with murder the death of his 77-year-old grandmother after fighting with his mother and brother about a TV show, investigators said.

His career spanned 44 years with the department and included such honors as being named Officer of the Year in 1988, according to the Columbus Police Department.
