Most of the borewells in Varthur and surrounding areas were dried up owing to deficit rainfall last year and summer heat, thus causing an acute shortage of water. This prompted the elected representatives and the BWSSB authorities to take the decision to have a water filling point for Varthur and its surrounding areas. ​

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has commenced supplying 3 lakh litres of treated zero bacterial water to tech firm Wipro daily.

According to residents, the pipeline in the area was damaged due to BESCOM work and has not been rectified yet. “In February, the pipeline supplying Cauvery water was damaged, but we have been getting bills from BWSSB. The BESCOM work between Whitefield’s main road to Nallurhalli damaged the pipeline. Initially, we started receiving polluted water, and then there was no water supply at all.

A resident of Pai Layout, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that some of the others conveniently forget to switch off water pumps after overhead water storage tanks are filled with water.

The borewell digging menace has been haunting the residents, those depending on the existing borewells for water at Ambedkar Nagar in Whitefield. There are around 200 dwellings at Ambedkar Nagar. There were five borewells but four of them dried up. The residents’ only chance is the existing borewell which they are all dependent on for water supply this summer.

The residents said the BWSSB authorities have failed to ensure that all the dwellings adjacent to the lake have underground drainage (UGD) facilities. “It is the responsibility of the BBMP Lakes Department and the BWSSB engineer to prevent dirty water from entering the lake.
