Michigan 2022 safeties recap: Rod Moore and friends take a big step forward

Upon Further Review 2021: Defense vs Georgia

Formation Notes: Bowl games tend to get a lot of looks because coaches use the extra time to install more of them. Georgia used a lot of multi-TE sets and varied formations with them to hunt good matchups. I stuck with numeric conventions to make it easier to follow, so for example this is Gun 13 Heavy (shotgun, 1 RB, 3 TEs, heavy formation). And here’s the next play with the same personnel, which we’ll call “Gun 13 Empty 5w.” I referred to this defensive setup as “4-4 Zero” because there are no safeties. The offense is a “Gun 12 Str F Flex’ since it’s a normal 3-wide with the extra guy to the strong side (“Str”) with an "F" (not on the line of scrimmage) TE flexed out. Finally, this is Bone: Substitution Notes: TrueBlueinTexas provides. As in the second example above, Michigan tried to have a 5-2 unit that replaced Moore, Ojabo, and the starting DTs with Jeter-Speight-Jenkins-Harrell. It immediately got burned in a matchup problem. They also ran a lot o

End of Year Roster Overview: Defense & Special Teams

Part II here was split off from Part I: The Offense because the defensive attrition was coming fast and furious. Since that post Villari and Filiaga have entered the portal. As for the defense/special teams: Played out eligibility: Brad Hawkins, Jordan Whittley, Elijah Pierre. In the portal: Anthony Solomon, Darion Green-Warren, Andre Seldon, George Johnson III. NFL Departures: Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Daxton Hill, Chris Hinton, Vincent Gray. Awaiting NFL decisions: Josh Ross, Jake Moody, Brad Robbins. Other grads with a 6th year option: Jess Speight, Donovan Jeter. Grads with 2 years left: Julius Welschof, Joey George, Taylor Upshaw, Michael Barrett, Gemon and German Green.  Indicated in November they intend to be back: The Greens. Michigan also lost DL coach Shaun Nua to the same job at USC. I’m expecting Ross and Moody at least to depart for the pros, and we’re probably not done with attrition from positions where younger guys have passed older ones. Hinton was a surpri

Upon Further Review 2021: Defense vs Iowa

Event notice: If you're not going to be in Miami, and you're looking for New Years Eve plans where you can be surrounded by other people who understand the thing about the football, HomeSure Lending is hosting a watch party/NYE celebration at Cultivate Coffee and Tap House. There will be dinner and dessert by Cultivate Kitchen, Side Biscuit Wings & Biscuits, a midnight champagne toast, and drinks. Tickets are $75 or $55 if you're the designated driver. Rule is you have to be vaccinated or have a negative test in the last 24 hours, and masks are required while standing/moving about. Space is limited to ~60 people (half capacity) for safety and so we can all see the screen. Think we have 30 already signed up. Event is subject to cancellation and full refund if we think the covid numbers are too high. Formation Notes: Iowa lined up their FB/2nd TE in a lot of different ways. I mostly treated him as a TE, so this is “Offset 12 SB” meaning offset shotgun with 1 RB and

Upon Further Review 2021: Defense vs Ohio State

Formation/Nomenclature Notes: OSU would line up their TE as a deep H-back which I called “F” so this is “Pistol F Wk,” meaning the slot receiver (H), is opposite the side the TE is on. Substitution Notes: Barrett came in for Ross on a few passing downs, probably to get a little more speed out there. Snap counts. Lexicon Note: I also started tracking “WRDIS,” which stands for Wide Receivers Doing Insane Shit, because OSU’s three dudes were making incredible plays against coverage that would have beaten anything less. This is an acronym, pronounced like “whirr diss,” because I had to break it out so many times that it was cumbersome to read it as an initialism. Hopefully it becomes a thing in offensive UFRs as BROYLES WINNER JOSH GATTIS’s wards get to the part of their careers where they can grow full beards. For now it’s an OSU receiver thing with enough exasperation in it that you’re forgiven if you start pronouncing the ‘h’ sound with the ‘w’. [After T
