The yearlong suspension of horse-drawn funerals at Arlington National Cemetery is expected to extend for several more months as the Army faces obstacles in improving horse care, service officials said Tuesday.

Klinger, a gentle giant of an Army horse who honored fallen veterans and brought comfort to grief-stricken children, has retired following 20 years of service.

The pair of adopted Army horses served at Arlington National Cemetery. One of them even pulled the casket for President Reagan.

The time is needed, officials say, to "reset" the program, which has more than half its horses in rehabilitation.
