Entering their home tournament with a five-game losing streak, the Calvary Lutheran Lions needed some momentum for the stretch run of their season.
They took the first step in that direction Friday night, picking up a 64-33 pool-play victory against the Columbia Independent Lions in the Calvary Lutheran Tournament.
Kyle Hagemeyer surpassed 1,000 career points and led the way with 28 to push the Calvary Lutheran Lions to a 72-68 victory Friday against Kansas City Lutheran in pool play of the Calvary Lutheran Tournament.
It wasn’t the start the Calvary Lutheran Lions were looking for. The Lions fell into an early 14-point deficit Tuesday night against the St. Elizabeth Hornets and dropped an 80-57 decision at Calvary Lutheran High School. St. Elizabeth scored on its first three possessions on its way to a 16-2 lead with a little less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Calvary Lutheran Lions continually closed the gap. But they couldn’t clear that gap. “A lot of it had to do with our energy today,” Calvary coach Beau Monson said Wednesday afternoon after the Lions dropped a 66-58 decision to the Dixon Bulldogs at Calvary Lutheran. “A game in the middle of the day, the boys not being school, whatever it might be, it was something we were battling.
