Trudeau said there were signs some truckers were regrouping outside the capital Ottawa and might come back to try to restart a three-week occupation.

The last big rigs were towed Sunday out of Canada's capital, where the streets were quiet for the first time in almost a month after a massive police operation ended a drawn-out siege by protesters opposing Covid health rules.

The Canadian police have secured the capital city Ottawa with fences as the city workers cleaned up trash and snow ploughs cleared streets on Sunday (February 20).  After a couple of days of tense standoffs and use of force by Canadian police, the three-week-long demonstrations in Ottawa ended. Ottawa's Interim Police Chief Steve Bell told reporters: "We promised earlier this week that we would clear our streets and give them back to our residents."

Canadian police claim to have retaken the capital Ottawa which has been hit along with other cities by weeks-long demonstrations and seen the Emergency Act imposed for the second time in the country's history. 

Several people have been camping in front of parliament for more than three weeks to protest against Covid-19 restrictions.

The trucker protest, which grew until it closed a handful of Canada-U.S. border posts and shut down key parts of the capital city for weeks, could echo for years in Canadian politics and perhaps south of the border.

The protesters initially wanted an end to cross-border COVID-19 vaccine mandates for truck drivers, but the blockade has gradually turned into an anti-government and anti-Justin Trudeau demonstration.

Canadian police moved Friday to clear a trucker-led demonstration against Covid rules, arresting 70 people and towing away dozens of vehicles that have been choking streets of the Canadian capital for three weeks.
