President Joe Biden on Tuesday will declare two new national monuments in an effort to protect hundreds of thousands of acres of public land, White House officials said.

The White House announced plans to establish two new national monuments as part of President Joe Bidens land conservation agenda, which it said would protect and conserve 514,000 acres of public land in the West.

The Spirit Mountain area, also known as Avi Kwa Ame, would be the largest protected area so far under the Biden administration.

Spirit Mountain in Nevada will be among the areas included for federal protection after President Biden proclaims the area a national monument.

Biden's actions come as he faces sharp criticism from environmental groups and youth activists over his approval of the huge Willow oil drilling project in Alaska.

Biden will designate national monuments near El Paso, Texas as well as in Nevada and near Hawaii.
