A spokesperson told us heavy freezing rain kept the 40 contracted crews out treating roads busy. They were putting down salt to help break up the icy patches. The difficulty in that was when we had heavy rain move through, it could wash the salt off the roads. Jenkins admits it wasnt fun waiting in traffic but understands why Highway Patrol needed to make the call. I could have easily been one of those people. Once you hit ice, it doesnt are. Troopers told me they feared if they didnt shut down portions of these highways that someone would have been critically injured or even killed. Including some first responders. Breaking news out of Catawba County, officers shot and killed a man who they say lunged at them with a knife. In the past 30 minutes, channel 9 spoke to the Maiden Police chief about the incident. Roads are treacherous right now. Some drivers losing control of their cars while going just 15 to 20 miles per hour. The d. O. T. Here at Catawba County is putting sand and salt down along with some brine on some of the over passes and some of the problem areas where theyve had accidents. We talked with one driver who wrecked this morning about these conditions. This guy we saw a bunch of guys fish tailing. Its ridiculous. People need to slow down. Take it slow. If you dont have to go out today, dont go out. Its not worth it. Reporter i think the hardest thing is for folks, when they step outside, they look and they see grass, they see wet roads, the roads have a lot of black ice. The key into the afternoon is the temperature. Right now were holding in the mid 20s. Hopefully itll rise later this evening and get above the freezing mark. Very heavy rain. A couple minutes ago we werent able to see that far ahead of us because of the rain. Were just to the north of the strongest part of the storm. I mentioned just north of high sholes, very heavy rain and strong winds. Its moving very fast. The storm is under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 12 45, its moving at 60 to 70 Miles Per Hour. So it will be here and gone but we had to really slow down our speed, both hands on the wheel because of the winds that were so strong. Weve been hearing reports of downed power lines and trees. Were likely going to see some of those throughout areas of lincoln and Gaston County with these strong thunderstorms. Were getting near the lincolnton area, light rain still continuing here in storm cam. Still some very dark ominous clouds ahead of us. Theyre moving very fast here this afternoon.
