The re-election of Cederberg Mayor Ruben Richards from the Cederberg Eerste party could be challenged after a motion of no confidence in the Patriotic Alliance and ANC succeeded during a special council meeting this week.



A special council meeting held at the Cederberg Municipality on Monday turned sour after councillors from the FF Plus and Cederberg Eerste party were forced to leave amid allegations of misconduct.

Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie wants to be SA president if the party gets at least 10% of the vote.

The responsibility for rebuilding bridges in Lambert’s Bay in the Cederberg Local Municipality lies with the new ward councillor, who has been the town’s medical doctor for 35 years.

The Cederberg Municipality has been embroiled in a political fracas following the ousting of its mayor Dr Ruben Richards.

A motion of confidence in Cederberg Mayor Ruben Richards has succeeded after allegations of fraud and corruption were levelled against him, which prompted a forensic investigation.

The ballot was marked by the lowest voter turnout in post-apartheid South African history – and, for the first time, the ANC’s support fell below 50%.
