Today in 1066, the Duke of Normandy, later known as William the Conqueror, pushed away from the silty shoreline of the Somme River and set sail, beginning the Norman invasion and eventual conquest of England. His army was composed of soldiers from Normandy (speaking Norman French), Brittany (speaking Celtic Breton), Flanders (speaking a combination of Flemish, Dutch, and Old French), and French (also speaking Old French).
