Chef Rigato reflects on working for Prentice early in his career and the lessons he learned.
Chef Matt Prentice died Thursday, April 8, at the age of 62 after a brief non-COVID-19 related illness.
Prentice was an influential chef and restaurateur in metro Detroit who started Unique Restaurant Corp., which was later renamed Matt Prentice Restaurant Group. Among the restaurants under that banner were Morels and Shiraz two restaurants where Chef James Rigato worked under Prentice early in his career.
“So many new things for me as a young chef happened because of Matt Prentice Restaurant Group,” Rigato says.

What some might not know is that Prentice was dedicated to giving back.
Prentice did multi-million dollar deals, had dozens of restaurants, delis and catering companies. He also would cook five star food for the homeless for years.
Prentice went to the International Culinary Institute, but left early to take his last $200 and keep his late father’s unique deli open.

He made and lost fortunes in the bare-knuckle restaurant business.
At one time, he swore he would never put a restaurant in Downtown Detroit, but he changed his mind.

Matt Prentice, of the Three Cats restaurant in Clawson, has died at the age of 62.
“It is with great sadness we announce the death of Chef Matt Prentice, who succumbed after a brief non-COVID related illness,” the restaurant said in a statement. “Prentice was a passionate, generous and creative force whose love of service was made evident by the kitchens he created and the beautiful food he so lovingly prepared.”
Prentice was a Detroit native and worked at many restaurants in the area, including Coach Insignia, Northern Lakes Seafood, Shiraz, Morels, Duet, No. VI Chophouse, Plaza Deli and others.
