World leaders rushed to congratulate French President Emmanuel Macron for his re-election on Sunday in a second round marked by a rise in the far-right vote.

Emmanuel Macron is set to win a second French President term after defeating far-right leader Marine Le Pen, the projections on Sunday (April 24) showed.  Polling firms for French television channels based on a sample of the vote count projected that Macron was set to win 57.6-58.2 per cent of the vote compared with Le Pen on 41.8-42.4 per cent.  Important to note that the outcome is expected to be confirmed by official results overnight.

French President Emmanuel Macron comfortably won reelection to a second term Sunday, according to polling agencies projections. The result offered France and the European Union the reassurance of leadership stability in the blocs only nuclear-armed power as the continent grapples with the fallout from Russias invasion of Ukraine.

The president, 42, tested positive for the virus on Thursday morning after the “onset of the first symptoms”. He joins leaders including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazils Jair Bolsonaro, who have all contracted the virus.
