The city of St. Petersburg announced Fire Chief Jim Large will retire on March 1.

Mayor Ken Welch said he told James Large a post on social media, which displayed wording some viewed as a taunt, showed “poor judgment.”

St. Petersburg Fire Chief James Large, who was placed on administrative leave during an investigation into comments in 2023, will retire in March after 50 years.

St. Petersburg Fire Chief James Large has been reinstated after being placed on administrative leave earlier this month amid allegations of bullying and discrimination.   

St. Pete Fire Rescue Chief James Large responded to allegations against him of bullying and discrimination Friday. Large said he denies all the allegations, and said he has worked to increase diversity within the department.

Allegations against Large and the culture of his fire department were brought to light in a recent anonymous employee survey in which a few dozen responses called out the fire department’s diversity.
