Election Roundup: Signs stolen, Galesburg misspelled in mailer

Election Roundup: Signs stolen, Galesburg misspelled in mailer Election sign thefts   Tuesday, Galesburg Police released a notice of multiple reports of stolen election signs. They noted that this is a theft punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.  Police Chief Russ Idle was quoted saying that anyone caught stealing election signs will be arrested. The thefts have impacted at least one mayoral candidate personally.  Mayoral candidate Peter Schwartzman took to Facebook Tuesday night saying that his signs started disappearing from his own yard Monday night.  “I am pretty confident that I will be able to find out who did this on video. It is so ridiculous that someone is so callous to remove yard signs,” he said. “As the police chief made clear in a press release today, people engaging in this type of activity will be prosecuted and jail time is a potential outcome.”

NAACP calls sheriff's Facebook post 'inflammatory'

GALESBURG A Facebook post attributed to Knox County Sheriff David Clague was posted and then quickly deleted Friday, Jan. 15, over language that some community members have called divisive and potentially racially insensitive. House Bill 3653, passed by the Illinois House and Senate and spearheaded by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, and awaiting approval from the governor, could bring big changes to law enforcement, leading to negative reactions about its passage from state law enforcement agencies and organizations.  After its passage, a Facebook post attributed to Clague drew criticism from community members and the Galesburg NAACP branch. We have a job to do and that is to protect and serve the citizens of Knox County who have shown their support for us, he said. Hold your head high and be proud! Resigning is not acceptable and by doing so, it shows the Black Caucus that they won. We are better than that!

Peoria man faces charges connected to shooting death of Galesburg teen

GALESBURG A 17-year-old from Peoria died Wednesday following a gunshot wound, according to Galesburg police. A Peoria man, 18, is now in custody, arrested on burglary and felony murder charges connected to the case, though he was not arrested on suspicion of being the trigger man. After a call at 10:22 p.m., police responded to Galesburg Guns and Ammo on South Henderson Street on Wednesday in response to a disturbance there involving gunshots. When officers arrived, they determined that several suspects had broken into the business.  Police Chief Russ Idle said they used a large rock or cinder block to break in and that investigation has shown there were four or five individuals attempting the burglary.
