An egg is removed from the ovary of the person who will be carrying the child, and artificially fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The embryo is then returned to the uterus. It can be carried out using eggs and sperm from donors, as well as a pregnant person and their partner, making it a viable option for individuals and couples experiencing infertility for a variety of different reasons.
