Professor spotlight: Crews roams from Nepal to Denison

Donald Keough, News Editor– When you walk into one of Dr. Chris Crews’ classes, you’ll notice that it’s different from what you might expect. For example, during one of his Friday international studies classes, a reggae-pop fusion song, called “Searching” by Matisyahu was playing while Crews chatted among students, dressed in a smoking hat from

Colchester Student 1800 | Model Engineer

I have a Student 1500 square-head, circa 1969, and I dont know if Colchester modified the dimensions of the footprint for any later 1800 model. However, from the foundation plan given in the manual for my lathe the overall dimensions are as follows: a. Total length of machine, including drip-tray overhang is 61". b. The diagram suggests an additional 18" clearance is given to the left of the machine to facilitate the removal of the change-wheel guard. This will be required regardless of the mac...

Lower back issues | Model Engineer

I went down with what I eventually discovered was ankylosing spondylitis (AS) when I was 18, or therabouts. Im now 78. Diagnosis was confirmed when I was 38, and I was put on mefenamic acid/ponstan (an NSAID - Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) for pain relief. Ultimately, the drug, although good at pain relief, affected my stomach so Im now on lansoprazole for, I think, acid reduction, and no more NSAIDs. Fortunately, after about 40 years of intermittent pain, stiffness & sciatica, the AS "...

Lathe gear calculation | Model Engineer

Asked a similar question some time ago but forgotten the answer.....doh! Could some kind soul take 5 minutes and enlighten me on how to calculate lathe gear changes required for selective pitches please? I can see on machine what gears I need but how exactly does this work out eg. my machine has 8tpi leadscrew, I have 20,30,40,50,55,60,63,70,75 + 80 gears. For a 26tpi thread I would need 70, 65, 30 + 60 gears but how does the maths work here exactly? My previous thread a gentlemen mentioned t...

Myford Super 7 with 'Big Bore Conversion'

Posted by Chris Crew on 30/06/2021 13:26:48: I have visited the workshop of Roy Milner, nr. Lincoln, when I collected a Myford S7 cross-slide from him that I won on eBay. I am not qualified enough to comment on the technical attributes of his big-bore conversions, but simply by observation of his work and the finished examples of his converted lathes, I have to say the products I observed looked absolutely superb. In fact, had I not had the Maitresse de Maison in tow, I would have been tempted ...

Quick change tool post and parting tool for a lathe

Andy, Unfortunately because of the code of conduct your link has been deleted so you wont get much feedback I fear! To explain there is a very strict code on this site to stop "unfair" competition and potential tax evasion, no doubt sponsored by HMRC that means any reference to cheap and nasty probably sub standard goods is removed tout suite. (I say this just in case you are confused and have recieved no other advise given this looks like your first post!). Dont be discouraged! You will have...

Faster Screw-Cutting | Model Engineer

I am fortunate enough to have an Ainjest rapid threading attachment fitted to my Colchester Student lathe which makes screw-cutting as easy as feeding buns to elephants, as a dear old colleague of mine used to say. Being an admirer of the late Jack Radford, I have recently been considering making his Six-Position Saddle Stop for my Myford ML7-R which works in a similar way but disengages the lathes own half-nuts, rather than an auxiliary half-nut as on the Ainjest. Could I enquire as to whether...

Chinese lathe | Model Engineer

What gears do you have? If it is like my Sieg C3 mini lathe the Manual lists, in various places, 2 x 20T, 30T, 35T, 2 x 40T, 2 x 45T, 50T 55T, 57T, 60T, 65T , and 2 x 80T Against the time when I want to cut Imperial threads, I bought a 63T, (and an extra 45T for some reason. ) For the finest feed rate, the manual advises Driver 20T: Stud 80T/20T Leadscrew:80T This gives a 16:1 reduction, so a 1.5 mm Leadscrew will produce a feed of 0.9375 mm / rev of the chuck. If you want an even finer...
