The heat doesn't stop volunteers with the Visiting Nurse Association of Texas from delivering Meals on Wheels to North Texans who depend on them. But the volunteers do need to be careful.
After thieves stole copper and equipment from a non-profit that typically provides meals for hundreds of Dallas ISD students, the community is coming together to keep kids fed at summer camps. At the same time, there is still a race to get the copper needed to restore service at Hunger Busters.
This long stretch of hot weather is hard on those who are homebound and may not be able to seek out cooling supplies. That's where volunteers become an important lifeline.
The pastor of Our Calling says he knows of at least two homeless people who have died from chronic heat exposure. Volunteers are going out to try and get these folks off the streets. Other organizations like the Visiting Nurse Association of Texas are doing their part to help our most vulnerable residents stay cool.
