As law enforcement heads fret about mental health-related calls and clamor for a local facility for compulsory commitments, others advocate for alternative options.

The eight police officers who mainly work the downtown area are tasked with building relationships, enforcing the law and providing security and safety, especially around bar closing time.

The City of Fargo has an ordinance for panhandling, and one of the points of it the ordinance says quote “it shall be unlawful for any person to aggressively panhandle in any area within the City of Fargo.”

Authorities, though, say there’s no data to support random attacks are on the rise, and say downtown is safe.

Fargo Police Department will have more officers downtown, but it says partners like the Downtown Engagement Center are essential.

After a October 2021 robbery incident, Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney contacted police detectives, presuming to tell them not to follow a particular line of inquiry, and casting himself as part of the investigatory team. Mahoney says his son was a victim in the robbery.
