“Scargo Tower, for me . it is Dennis,” said Lambton, a member of the Dennis Select Board. “That’s the most iconic image of Dennis. You get a great view. If you’re up there on a clear day, you can see from the bay . to the ocean.”
But the view from the 30-foot stone tower, perched on what is considered the highest point on the mid-Cape, has been blocked over the past decade because of a lack of maintenance of shrubs, trees and other plants.
So, Lambton, a professional landscaper who has lived most of his life in Dennis, recently took some action. After getting approval from the town, he worked to clean up an area around the tower with the help of his father and brother, who are also part of the family business, E. Lambton Landscaping.
The new series
Clipped, which debuts tonight on Discovery +, doesn’t start with an elevator pitch so allow us to provide one. It’s a reality television competition show about topiary! You know, the rarefied art of creating decorative forms out of living trees, shrubs, and other flora!
Before you change channels consider this: Martha Stewart, Fernando Wong, and Chris Lambton serve as judges and all three have interesting, often hilarious, things to say about gardening, plants, and the precipitous gap between inspiration and execution. We’ve seen such an increased obsession with gardening in the last year. Why do you think the time is right?
In the whole history of televised home improvement, this was something that wasn’t really thought about. It opened up the opportunity to do something really fun that includes sculpture, vegetation, and really talented artists.
What were some of the standout pieces?
There was so much anticipation in every challenge translating an idea into a three-dimensional object is quite remarkable. I love to see how artists take a concept through the process to execution.
