As mentioned more than a few times already, we’ve seen some amazing images and videos from the Pipeline Valentine swell along the North Shore. We reported on it in realtime right here. We have three days of cam highlights from Pipeline right here. We nominated a Photo of the Swell right here. This was not a giant, Waimea/Outer Reef swell (though there were a couple moments on Saturday), but Pipeline and Backdoor took center stage and had moments of sheer brilliance, as showcased in the photo gallery below. (Stay tuned for some outstanding O’Neill Wave of the Winter as well. Oh, and fair warning: basically everyone in the below photos is going straight. There are no turns.)

Good news and bad news. First, the bad: the COVID-19 pandemic has toppled the traditional competitive season in Hawaii this winter. And the good? A seemingly endless run of swell has kept the Hawaiian Islands cranking for weeks on end.
And the bad news isn’t really
that bad, because, despite these unprecedented times and the lack of a “normal” winter, many events have pivoted into something special and fresh, and some new ones have cropped up, too. Like the Red Bull Magnitude event – an all-women, all-digital big-wave competition offering a prize purse of $40,000 for the top charging waterwomen in Hawaii during the course of the winter.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Capturing captivating surfing photographs during monster swells takes courage and a good eye.
Jackie Fiero and Christa Funk both have it.
âItâs similar to surfing in that sense where youâre in the spot for a wave or youâre not in the spot for a wave, or you wipe out or you donât,â Funk said.
Funk and Fiero are among a handful of female professional surf photographers from Hawaii Red Bull hired to document Hawaiiâs big winter surf.
