HONOLULU — Four inmates at the O‘ahu Community Correctional Center have been indicted by a grand jury for manslaughter in the death of another inmate.

Four Oahu Community Correctional Center inmates were indicted Wednesday on the charge of manslaughter in the 2020 beating death of fellow inmate Christopher Vaefaga, 36.

Christopher Vaefaga was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell in a module used to house gang members.

The suspected beating death of an inmate waiting for trial at Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC), followed by the discovery of a trove of contraband held by inmates, painfully demonstrate that life-threatening conditions and corruption continue to plague the facility.

The "shakedown" was partly prompted by unconfirmed reports that the beating death of an inmate was recorded on a cellphone, according to staff.

Police have opened a murder investigation after an inmate was found dead in his cell at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
