Kenneth Smith was sentenced to death for his role in a 1988 murder for hire and survived a previous attempt to execute him by lethal injection in 2022.

Kenneth Smith, 58, died at 8:25 pm Thursday night, after a slew of last minute appeals to several courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, failed.

It is the first known execution using nitrogen gas – a method some experts have said is veiled in secrecy and could lead to excessive pain or even torture.

Mike Sennett, who is one of Elizabeths sons said it was a bittersweet day after his mothers killer was executed with nitrogen gas today. He was officially pronounced dead at 8:25pm local time
