Fourteen months ago, Stafford supervisors envisioned a vibrant and futuristic downtown area near the county courthouse where families and friends could meet, eat, shop and socialize. They called the potential development Downtown Stafford.
John Holden, the countyâs economic development director, had previously told supervisors the county-owned, 28-acre site, which lies parallel to the southern edge of Courthouse Road near the U.S. 1 interchange, would be built with fewer brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Holden said broadband and smart energy, lighting, water and temperature controls would all be incorporated into energy-efficient housing units and commercial buildings. The technology would be so sophisticated, Holden said, it would electronically monitor the levels of trash in trash containers.
The 2021 election season in Virginia has begun, with in-person primary voting underway.
They are mostly Democratic primaries this year; most of the Republican races will be decided in a series of remote conventions May 8, although there will be a few GOP races on the ballot.
Most of the changes to voting in Virginia adopted last year due to the pandemic are still in place, but there are a few differences. Here’s what you need to know.
In-person voting
Voting started April 23; the final day of voting, primary day, is June 8. Polls that day will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are in line at 7 p.m., you will get to vote. If you are voting in-person before June 8, the hours vary. Check below for your county, city or town.

Stafford County is continuing its efforts with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and residents to implement a solution to the recurring flooding on the “S-curves” of Brooke Road, located between Raven Road and Maplewood Drive.
The Board of Supervisors recently approved the County’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2022-2031 Transportation Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) on April 20, 2021, which provides the funding necessary for the construction of an emergency access drive as well as all necessary improvements and repairs needed to bring Windermere Drive into the state highway system to allow the road to be open to public traffic.
Democrats can begin casting ballots in Virginiaâs June primary election this Friday, as early voting begins throughout the commonwealth.
The primary election will select Democratic nominees for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general ahead of November s election.Â
The Republican Party will pick its nominees for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general at a May 8 convention, using remote voting sites across the state.
But the Stafford GOP will use the June 8 primary to select a nominee for Aquia District supervisor, so early voting in that race also begins Friday. Republicans will choose between current Supervisor Cindy Shelton and former Supervisor Paul Milde to be the party s nominee to represent the Aquia District on the Board of Supervisors.Â
