On the occasion of World Day Against Cyber Censorship – which Reporters Without Borders (RSF) initiated and which is celebrated on 12 March – RSF is pleased to announce that its Operation Collateral Freedom is currently enabling the websites of more than 100 media outlets in 32 countries to circumvent censorship – a 20% increase in one year.    

Internet shutdowns during "key moments in a nation's life" effectively silence the media and restrict access to information.

On International Day for Universal Access to Information (28 September), Reporters Without Borders (RSF) sounds the alarm about a disturbing trend in sub-Saharan Africa – the blocking of access to news websites and often the entire Internet. So far this year, 12 deliberate Internet shutdowns have deprived millions of people of their right to news and information.

"Inquisiteur.net" is the second news website to be blocked in less than two weeks by the military junta in Guinea.

For the second time in less than two weeks, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has restored access to a blocked news website in Guinea by creating a mirror site. The latest site had been blocked for 12 days as a result of censorship, although the government denies responsibility.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) recently used its mirror site technology "Operation Collateral Freedom" to restore online access to the German newspaper taz, which had presumably been blocked by the Vietnamese regime.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns attempts by the Iranian government to silence foreign media after issuing sanctions to foreign media outlets, in countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The sanctions highlight another way in which the regime continues to crackdown on free and independent media, RSF says.
