New art is set to hit the barren walls of Columbia Park next month thanks to a local grant and the determination of a local artist.

Portland Parks and Recreation is building a brand new $102 million indoor aquatics facility, leaving the community of Northern Portland without year-round pool access until Winter 2029 at the earliest.

The new aquatic center is still in the planning phase and will be constructed in Northgate Park.

A new aquatic center in North Portland is closer to becoming a reality thanks to funds directed to the project by Commissioner Dan Ryan.

The bureau has a list of roughly 1,200 needed repairs and upgrades, all identified and with costs roughly estimated. Most languish without any movement.

Most of the cost will be covered by fees on cannabis businesses and leftover pandemic relief money.

Portland Parks & Recreation is responsible for maintaining greenspaces that comprise 15% of Portland, but not all of the city’s residents enjoy the same access to public parks and services, the department acknowledged in a report it released last week touting its mission to center communities of color in ongoing improvements.
