'The future of the country is in our hands': 2024 MLK Day celebration calls for engaged citizenship

Have we taken our eyes off the prize? This is the question fueling the theme for this year’s annual MLK Day observance. 'It affirmed my belief in this community' — Reflecting on 50 years of Lexington's MLK Day observance

In 1974, Chester Grundy joined the MLK Day committee when he began his career at the University of Kentucky and took the role as MLK Day program coordinator. In this role, Grundy would plan the programming, rally speakers and publish information to promote the event. As he settled into new his role, Grundy began to see the potential of what this observance could be.

50th anniversary for Lexington MLK Day celebration slated for Jan. 16, 2023

This year’s MLK Holiday Celebration will be on Jan. 16, 2023, beginning with the annual Freedom March at 1 p.m. and concluding with the powerful Commemorative Program held at the Central Bank Center at 2 p.m. The community will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lexington’s annual citywide observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, making it one of the oldest such programs in the country.
