Captain Bill Pinkney, the first African-American man to sail around the world solo via Cape Horn, has died in Atlanta at age 87.

The history-making sailor who grew up on Chicago’s South Side was the first Black man inducted into the Sailing Hall of Fame, but insisted he was an “ordinary man.”

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, a young William Pinkney would walk from his house at 33rd Street and Indiana Avenue in Bronzeville down 31st Street to the lakefront.
