Gardening beginners in Mold start growing vegetables at home

GREEN-fingered gardeners in Mold are proving that you don’t have to be a gardening expert to have fun growing your own food at home. Spending more time at home over the last year during repeated lockdowns has created a huge interest in gardening across the UK. And ten households in Mold taking part in the Parkfields Community Centre Growing Food project are no different. Thanks to grant funding from the Hubbub Foundation UK, they are all learning new skills and have been provided with the equipment and materials needed for ‘Square Foot Gardening’ – in a four-foot square raised bed.

Co-op partners with environmental charity to redistribute 6 8 million meals a year

Co-op partners with environmental charity to redistribute 6.8 million meals a year Print Co-op and environmental charity Hubbub are partnering to fast-track the expansion of community fridges across the UK. Community fridges are open to everyone in communities – without any need to be referred or having to prove eligibility – to share fresh food that would otherwise have gone to waste. The food is donated by businesses – with Co-op donating surplus food from its stores. The fridges also enable communities to learn new skills through activities such as cookery sessions and workshops on how to grow fruit and veg. The partnership will see the existing Community Fridge Network increase to 250 community fridges over the next year, saving a further 6.8 million meals per year from going to waste.  The move builds on the success of the existing 150 fridges in the network, which redistribute an average of almost 6,000 meals per fridge each month.

The funding will allow Hubbub to fast-track the expansion of its community fridges across the UK, in an effort to both tackle food poverty and improve access to food that would otherwise end up going to waste. The new programme will see 100 additional community fridges installed across the UK, expanding Hubbub s existing network to 250 sites by the end of the year.
