Cyber security experts are de-bunking the rumors, saying the Name Drop feature included in the iOS software update is perfectly safe.

After validating a claim made in late July, officials found the data was taken from 2021 and earlier.

"These threats have been ever-present, but they have been growing not just in Minnesota but around the globe," said John Israel, chief information security officer for Minnesota Information Technology Services.

Minnesota lawmakers have passed legislation providing $24 million in grants to help school districts across the state improve their cybersecurity protections, as well as enabling the utilization of available "safe to school" revenue for upgrading their digital safety systems, following separate cyberattacks that impacted Minneapolis Public Schools and the state's Education Department this year, reports CBS News Minnesota.

MDE says an initial investigation found that 24 of its files were accessed during the data breach. Those files contained information on thousands of students in foster care and some students in the Minneapolis and Perham school districts and Hennepin Technical College.

While GPS technology can be helpful to consumers in a variety of ways, more criminals are leveraging the technology to illegally track and even stalk their victims.
