America could be. 2.2 million deaths were we not to do social distancing, were we not to shut down the schools. of course, weve done that, the best case scenario is 100,000 to 240,000 lives lost. one thing worth noting from that press conference, there were homes when it seemed like the president was talking to himself. when he said no, this isnt like the flu, its much more vicious. well, its the president last week and many times this year likened this to flu. saying more people die from the fl...

Too late? joining us now, im honored to say, is dr. christopher murray, the director of the university of washingtons institute for health metrics and evaluation, ihme. the institute is using its models to project that two weeks from now, the u.s. could see a peak of over 2,200 deaths a day. the institute is also issuing projections for when individual states will see their peak in terms of the crushing demand on their hospitals, states like new york, whose peak is currently estimated to occur n...

Employ social distancing and get really serious about this, we will be able to cut these numbers. but if we dont, those numbers have a chance of going further up and up. you know, the rise is exponential, and we are at a point where we will -- where we can make a difference. and if we dont take action now, we could be seeing numbers that are much worse than what we heard today. >> hey, kim, the president seemed like this was news to him that states were competitively bidding against each other l...

Deaths at the high end range of this estimate, and i ask you again, do we have any idea how many cases in our country right now? >> right now, we have no idea where we sit on this curve because of the failure to get testing out widespread to the vast majority of the country. testing is still difficult for people who are sick to get. they have to still meet criteria. people are also not going to the e.r. if they feel sick. so access is also great to how many tests were rolling out right now. weve...

Paraphrase right here -- that basically this number, this 100,000 to 240,000 deaths is based on people doing what theyre supposed to do, social distancing, making sure that they stay at home, employing all of the methods that we know, and also predicated on the assumption -- and these models are all based on assumptions, things we think are going to happen -- that all states are going to come to their senses and shut down activity and put people in a stay-at-home position. and thats not happened...

Of the methods that we know, and also predicated on the assumption -- and these models are all based on assumptions, things we think are going to happen -- that all states are going to come to their senses and shut down activity and put people in a stay-at-home position. and thats not happened yet. i saw chris murray, who came up with these models, on tv just a little while ago, actually on msnbc. and he laid out the case very clearly. he said, listen, every day matters, and everything everybody...

Testing is still difficult for people who are sick to get. they have to still meet criteria, and people are also not going to the e.r. if they feel sick. so access is also going to dictate how many tests we actually are rolling out right now. weve been thinking about how many people are out there, how many people might be sick. we just dont know. and even when we get testing up and running, its only going to tell us whats happened about 10 to 14 days before. remember dr. fauci says this over and...
