It would melt from the hottest part down to the lowest part. that actually goes through a process of called candling so if looks like candle wax dripping down the fuel rods. we actually did experience at three mile island a meltdown 30% to 55% of the core, somewhere in there, actually melted and that molten part of the core actually relocated to the bottom of the pressure vessel. the pressure vessel stayed intact, so the molten core never left the pressure vessel to actually reach the containmen...
