A 95-year-old dementia sufferer has died after being tasered in an Australian care home by a police officer who has been charged in relation to her death.

Clare Nowland fell and fractured her skull last week after she was tasered by the senior constable who had been called to her aged-care home in Cooma, because she was carrying a knife.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb says it "takes courage" not to view the body-cam footage of an elderly woman being tasered, and that she wants "a complete picture" of the incident before she looks at it, as the woman's family asks media for privacy.

The next few days will be "critical" for a 95-year-old woman who was tasered by a New South Wales police officer the state's police commissioner says.
