Epidemiologists have disputed the prediction of another devastating wave in the country, unless a more deadly variant emerges.

Indore has raised concerns after 16 deaths were reported in the district in the last 6 days, indicating a rise in the fatality rate touching the highest in the third wave.

IIT Kanpur professor Dr Manindra Agrawal said that the Omicron-triggered coronavirus third wave has reached its peak in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai as predicted by IIT’s Sutra model.

India also witnessed 277 fresh fatalities due to COVID-19 and the country's death toll has now increased to 4.84 lakh.

Experts have said that the highly transmissible Omicron variant is going to infect people in a never-seen-before number.

"If there are 80 lakh Covid cases in third wave..., even if 1 per cent case fatality is presumed, we can land up with 80,000 deaths," said Dr. Vyas in the grim communication.
