Astronomers from the University of Hawaiʻi have unexpectedly discovered an immense bubble of galaxies, named “Hoʻoleilana,” thought to be a fossil-like remnant from the birth of the universe.

The bubble came into the spotlight while scourging through a large dataset called Cosmicflows-4.

Scientists have released the largest-ever map of 56,000 galaxies allowing for a more accurate estimation of the true size and age of the universe.

UH astronomers have helped assemble the largest-ever compilation of high-precision galaxy distances, called Cosmicflows-4.
