UPMC Susquehanna to provide their own police force | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 8, 2021 UPMC Susquehanna will soon have its own armed police force at Williamsport and Divine Providence hospitals, a hospital executive said. Steven P. Johnson, president of UPMC in the Susquehanna Region, told City Council Thursday about the idea under development at the hospital. He said he wanted to see it happen in the next 90 days and will work with the city administration and council on the project. The hospital police officers would be empowered to make arrests on the hospital campuses but not outside of that jurisdiction, he said. Hospital executives worked out some details with police this week. “Yes, Williamsport Bureau of Police command staff met this week with hospital security command staff,” said Damon R. Hagan, city police chief.

Snow removal poses challenges for communities | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com Communities around Lycoming County found different results in handling the piles of snow left by Wednesday’s snowstorm. City residents, on edge because of spread of COVID-19, remain exasperated by a combination of fewer plow passes during the height of the blizzard of 2020 and having to unbury their vehicles to get to work or to shop. It’s the busiest weekend of the year for shopping and many vehicles remain stuck, some of them abandoned in the middle of streets, said Adam Winder, acting general manager of the city streets and parks department, otherwise known as public works.

Finance committee sides against proposed police contract | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com In a clear sign of challenging economic times, two of three members of City Council’s finance committee sent a strong message to the city Bureau of Police and its Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 union Tuesday, giving a proposed four-year police collective bargaining contract negative recommendations. Councilman Adam Yoder and Councilwoman Bonnie Katz, both Republicans, voiced concern about the contract proposal to increase salaries for the unionized officers that Mayor Derek Slaughter and Chief Damon R. Hagan negotiated. Councilwoman Liz Miele, committee chairwoman, said she would favor a positive recommendation and voted against the negative recommendation.

Council to dive into proposed 1-mill budget hike | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com City Council is expected to tackle next year’s proposed $29 million budget in a remote meeting tonight. It remains unclear if council will adopt the proposed budget, but Council President Randall J. Allison said there is a consensus to get it done before the end of the year because if no budget is passed no money can be spent. Mayor Derek Slaughter’s proposed budget carries a proposed 1-mill tax hike, and he and council members said that could be reduced further with discussions tonight. One mill of real estate tax generates $860,000. A 1-mill tax increase would be $100 more for a house assessed at $100,000.
