九七艦攻は3人乗りで、宇佐市には訓練基地だった宇佐海軍航空隊（宇佐空）があった。1945年には兵庫県姫路から宇佐に飛来した部隊と宇佐の部隊で特攻隊・和気部隊を編成し、鹿児島県串良基地に移動して出撃している。引き揚げた機体は宇佐空を飛び立った可能性もある。
機体が到着した宇佐空の郷は、航空隊正門跡地に建つ。献花式では是永修治市長が「平和と繁栄は戦没者の尊い犠牲の上にあることを肝に銘じ、戦争の悲惨さと平和の尊さを継承していきます」と式辞を述べた。その後、参列者は黙とうし、献花。感慨深そうに機体を見学した。
市民団体「豊の国宇佐市塾」の平田崇英塾長（72）は「語り部として帰ってきたような気がする。機体を通じて『平和が大切だ』という搭乗者の思いに耳を傾けたい」と話した。【宮本勝行】
