the next six to eight hours across the region and the plains. you noted one of the most remarkable weather events has all the makings of a spring element, summer element and a winter one all wrapped into one taking place in the span of 12 or so hours. but upwards of almost 400 severe wind reports. you noted historic amount of hurricane force gusts, up wards of 55 of them. and 20 tornado reports. now, if you think we've talked about tornadoes a lot in the last week or so across the united states, of course, you'd be absolutely correct. you look at the numbers, it is as incredible as it gets. some 116 preliminary tornado reports so far in the month of december. eight of the first 16 days in the month of december have had tornadoes and historically speaking, the month of december is the quietest time of year when it comes to tornadoes. only 23 occur. this is 5-x the number of tornadoes you'd expect in the cold season. we're we're getting taking shape. here's what's happening. the severe element, tornadic
senator lindsey graham of south carolina thinks the bill is quote, dead, not just for 2021, but forever. how hard will it be to rebuild that momentum among democrats? >> reporter: well i don't think senator graham is the arbiter of this. he's not a supporter of this bill. so of course he will say it is dead. he may be right. we'll see. but building momentum is going to be i challenge. but democrats have, you know, really the only thing that has united them both sides of the party, the progressives and moderates is republican opposition. so they want to get something accomplished and they know the window is extraordinarily narrow in the new year. it is viewed right now as a lost opportunity. yes, the majorities are super tight but they're not getting by netter for sure so momentum is one thing that they'll have to build here but i think it is too early to say that it is dead for sure. there are a lot of popular items inside of this bill that a lot of democrats would like to see
oversight or review. and so, i think the court will be weighing that as well. >> well, also, one of the leaders of the push for this audit, a republican state senator, said about vendors for the audit, quote, i'm not going to be hiring political activists to become investigators, unquote. i mean, i have read some of the stuff about this vendor. do you think he kept his word? >> no, of course not. he has made very, very clear that he is doing this at the behest of others. he's clearly trying to undermine our democracy, and he continues to chase a lie. listen, i'm the chief law enforcement officer of the commonwealth of pennsylvania. you want to talk about voter fraud, anderson? i heard that in your leadup. we had a handful of cases of voter fraud that were prosecuted here in pennsylvania and in those cases, by the way, they were trying to cast an extra vote for donald trump. none of the widespread voter fraud that the senator leading this panel or any of the other
protection against omicron. what more do we know here? >> reporter: i think that's most concernin concerning not only in the mainland but where it is exported to. what we are hearing from hong kong researchers is this vaccine, sinovac, which is chinese made, is not nearly as efficient at protecting against this omicron variant. and they're saying that as they have run this research, that it really doesn't have any antibodies to essentially neutralize the new variant. chinese officials haven't spoken specifically on that. they oftentimes like to say they want to see more research come out and they stand by, of course, their vaccines. not to mention you have more than 80% of this population of 1.4 billion people who have been fully vaccinated. of course, they're hopeful that they will see some sort of protection. nonetheless, you have the strict measures still in place here. you've got borders that are heavily restricted still, and you've got essentially many of us living here in the midst of a bubble.
of england, perhaps even into the north west of wales, where there could be a few breaks overnight. but as you can see, not a great deal of sunshine on offer on friday. the winds are light in most places, just picking up a touch there in the far south—west of england. and again, it's mild. 8—9 degrees more typically across northern parts of england and scotland, this time temperatures are starting to ebb awayjust a little. this weekend, though, we're going to hang on the cloudy skies for most of the country. a lot of dry weather around as well, of course. limited amounts of sunshine means a limited amount of frost. it will be turning a bit colder as the weekend goes on. you can see we may have some sunshine across the north east of scotland, perhaps west wales, into the far south—west of england, where there's a bit more breeze on saturday. but otherwise, it looks cloudy once again. and we may just sneak those temperatures across southern parts in particular into double figures.

getting together with family and friends, and it's important. i think the question now has become not only are you vaccinated, but are you boosted. >> yeah. >> so, if people are planning to get together, that's a question to be asking. and people should feel comfortable asking that, especially people who are going to be in their homes. and really, people should be limiting gatherings or really trying to -- those who are eligible who have been vaccinated and of those who are vaccinated who are eligible who have been boosted. we are seeing, for example, look at cornell. look at the universities who are now shutting down because of issues. cornell had 1100 cases in the last week and they've had to shutdown the university. that's a population that's nearly entirely vaccinated. so the question is not just being vaccinated, but are you boosted. and to really take that to heart. >> we're seeing cornell, princeton and nyu and others are doing their winter exams online, you know, going virtual so they can try to stop this. all of this, of course, after thanksgiving when people went
