On May 20, the winners for the innovation award, “Renewable Material of the Year 2021” held at the three-day Renewable Materials Conference 2021 were announced. The three winners include Plantics and Vepa (Netherlands) for a hemp fiber and thermoset bioresin chair collection; LanzaTech (Skokie, Ill., U.S.) for household cleaners produced from recycled carbon from steel emissions; and Carbios (France) for enzymatic recycling of PET, respectively. According to event organizers, this was the first time innovations highlighted covers bio- and CO
2-based chemicals and materials, as well as chemical recycling.
The conference advisory board previously selected six companies from 36 individually listed innovative submissions to showcase their technologies and applications to the event audience. All products presented, per the award’s eligibility, were already available on the market or will be launched soon. The three winners were selected by the pa

Materials manufacturer Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany) introduces its first material developed by the additive manufacturing (AM) business recently acquired from Royal DSM (Geleen, Netherlands): a glass-fiber filled recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) for 3D pellet printing. Made from post-consumer PET waste, Arnite AM2001 GF (G) rPET brings structural performance to a part at a substantially lower carbon footprint than virgin material, enabling manufacturers to achieve a more circular supply chain without the need to compromise on performance.
The Renewable Materials Conference 2021, the follow-up event to the 13
th International Conference on Bio-based Materials, announced on April 29 the six nominees chosen by its advisory board for its “Renewable Material of the Year” Innovation Award. The comprehensive award, sponsored by Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany), looks for brand new applications that aim to avoid or substitute fossil-based virgin materials (produced either from biomass, directly via CO
2, utilization or recycling) and are either already on the market, or will be in the near future.
Nominated out of 36 submissions, two in particular, Malai Biomaterials Design (Kerala, India) and Dutch furniture manufacturer Vepa (Hoogeveen, Netherlands) and Plantics (Netherlands), apply composites; all nominees will present their new technologies and applications at the May 18-20 online event. The award winners will be chosen by the conference participants online on the second day of the conference.
