Delhi Police has nabbed a man in connection with the suspected data breach of the CoWin portal, with the Delhi Police Special Cell also detaining a minor. Centre has denied the breach of its CoWin database, which has registered 1.11 billion individuals and administered 2.21 billion doses.

The agency is looking into any potential leaks that could have happened from the databases of these states. While Karnataka and Kerala are learnt to be among the 11 states, there is no information yet on the remaining states.

India needs a robust regulatory data protection framework to counteract consumer mistrust. Sensitive personal information people routinely provide, including bank details and insurance data, must be secure, particularly in regard to its pace of digitisation. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill 2022, which addresses data protection legislation that contains citizens rights, was released to the public for consultation in November 2022.
