let s get an update right now on the war in ukraine where anti-putin fighters are boasting about cross border attacks on russian soil. our senior international correspondent sam conley has more for us. he s joining us from the war zone in eastern ukraine. i understand you spoke to one of these russian fighters. what did he tell you? reporter: yes, wolf. we spoke to a significant group of them, actually. they conducted a very spectacular raid, frankly. these are two groups of russian nationals fighting inside the ukrainian armed forces. now rather controversially they crossed into russia the beginning of this week, conducted a number of raids on a number of villages, penetrated quite deeply into russia
to ukraine is no stranger to cross border attacks but armed incursions like there are rare. and the mood here according to local russian officials has shifted. with empty buses coming into evacuate residents, while those who can are leaving by themselves. matthew chance, cnn, london. you wonder about not just the strategic but propaganda impact of an attack like that especially given that putin justification for this war in part was the safety of russian citizens. they weren t having the attacks on border towns prior to the invasion. and if that story gets out in russia media, how will he explain that russian soldiers are attacking him. very interesting to see. and the deputy science minister has died after feeling ill on a plane saturday according to the ministry of science and higher education. the putin critic was part of a russian delegation returning
a few weeks ago that allegedly ukraine was planning an attack and the u.s. kind of walked them back from that. this is something that ukrainians are well aware that the u.s. does not want them to do things like this and president zelenskyy is denying it. the u.s. doesn t know one way or another, but that s what analysts are now really digging into. to that point, we have seen headlines in recent weeks and months about cross border attacks and the ones close to the russian border, everyone would say that s part of the war. if you get deeper into russia, that s been part of the debate. be careful if it s true. but i want to come back to this in a moment. as i come back, let s listen to president seth will lent skit. he said, no way. i can repeat this message, and i think it will be understandable for everybody. we don t attack putin or moscow.
