The development of plastics allowed for a revolution in commercial, industrial, and household items. Take a look around you and you’re almost guaranteed to find plastics within eyeshot. As a result of their convenience, many things which were once designed to be robust and reusable have been replaced by disposable single-use plastic items.

Humanity has come to heavily rely on the benefits that plastics offer and their application can be found in almost every aspect of daily life. However, the major downside of this reliance on synthetic polymer-based materials is that it has been scientifically proven they are contributing to some of humanity's most-serious environmental issues.

Researchers in Japan have chemically recycled bioplastics into nitrogen-rich fertilizer in a process described as ‘facile and environmentally friendly’.

The growth of synthetic polymers, which are the building blocks of plastics, has resulted in a slew of major environmental problems. The worst of these is the overuse of petrochemical compounds and the non-recycling of non-biodegradable materials; just 14% of all plastic trash is recycled, barely making a dent in the problem.
